A Fair Port | Cretadivita Studio - Barron Naegel The design proposed here acknowledges and celebrates the bicentennial of the canal and its impact to Fairport and the greater region. Along with the role it played in expanding commerce, the canal was the result and application of new technologies, materials and processes. The pyramidal form of the base recalls the surveyor’s transit used for laying out the canal. The highly modified cement is the 21 st century version of the cement that was first used to reinforce the Canal walls. Glass mosaics create a colored map of the canal from approximately, the Great Embarkment Park to the Monroe County line. A sphere acts as a reminder of the ingenuity employed by amateur engineers and politicians in the canal’s realization. The apex to the sculpture is a simplified version of the plough used for digging the canal. It is an important tribute to the steel and composite design developed by Jethro Wood, which must have played a significant part in the creation of the Erie Canal at the beginning of the 19th century.
Among the many assets the canal served to the region, Fairport earned its namesake as a “fair port” from travelers to the Fairport Hotel during its founding. The combination of media used recognizes the importance given to the development of the canal and the region. As it was once an active commercial artery for mule driven barges, it is now oriented for recreation. Biking, walking, pleasure boats and kayaks are now the means for engagement. My overall design scheme is intended to complement, while accentuating the natural environment. Surface and color suggest the variety of landscape that surrounds the canal. The unique position of the site allows as well for the sculpture to serve as a visual gateway to the Bicentennial Trail and the village. I envision this sculpture and its placement on the trail, to be part of an enlivened, cultural hub along the canal for Fairport and Perinton. The artistic development of this, as with any area, can only contribute to its enrichment. PROGRESS IMAGES ![]() I LOVE FAIRPORT T-SHIRTS

Artist Statement:
“Connection” As I thought about the location of this work, about Fairport and the rich history of the canal, it only made sense to create a piece that reflects that history. The Canal was built between 1817 and 1825 with the purpose of connecting the east and west sides of NY State. It was built to bring people together, and bring goods and services across the state. The canal brought a rich stream of ideas, people, and goods across the state and allowed New York City to become one of the busiest seaports. This, in turn brought people to settle Fairport and other towns along the Erie Canal as people moved across the state and jobs, agriculture and industry developed. The work, “Connection” is organic in shape and flows upwards, much like water, it is a constant moving entity. The canal also allowed this flow of people, ideas and goods across the state. The work is connected at the base, separates and comes together again at the top. Every town through which the canal flows is unique and this piece reflects, with its two sections and the space between how we are unique towns/villages, but the canal allowed us to have a view of the future, a view of each other and how we now have a view of history. We can look through our differences, our uniqueness and yet as we step back and look at the bigger picture, we see how while we are different, we are flowing on the same path and we come together even though we are diverse. The sections of the work are filled with small octagonal holes that allow light to shine through. It is both aesthetically beautiful and symbolic of Fairport’s history and its beauty today as a town and village with a rich history in Monroe County.
